#ReadyHome ยท 14-day challenge

14 days. 2 minutes a day. A home that's ready before the ambulance arrives.

I'm Walter, a flight paramedic. The minutes before help arrives belong to whoever is in your kitchen. Each evening at 7 PM ET a new lesson unlocks here and on Facebook. Do the 2-minute action that night. "Later" is how nobody ever does it.

As a flight paramedic, I've seen it again and again: the minutes before the ambulance arrives decide the outcome. And those minutes belong to whoever is standing in your kitchen.

So starting tonight: 14 days, one small action a day, about 2 minutes each. By the end, your home is ready.

Day 1 is the simplest and one of the most important: can 911 actually find you?

๐Ÿ‘‰ DO IT NOW (2 minutes):
Write your full address, nearest cross road and a landmark on a card. Tape it by the fridge or phone. Then step outside tonight and check: is your house number visible from the road in the dark?

Not later. Right now, while you're thinking about it. "Later" is how nobody ever does it.

โœ… Done? Comment DONE on the Facebook post.
๐Ÿ” Share this to your page. The family that needs it most won't see it unless you do.

Tomorrow, Day 2: someone at your table can't breathe. Do you know the two moves that clear the airway? Follow Medic Path Pioneers so you don't miss it.

It's silent. No cough, no words. Just hands at the throat and a look you won't forget.

Choking kills thousands of Americans every year, and it happens fastest at the dinner table. The fix is two moves anyone can learn in two minutes:

1๏ธโƒฃ 5 firm back blows between the shoulder blades
2๏ธโƒฃ 5 abdominal thrusts, fist just above the belly button
Keep alternating. Someone calls 911.

๐Ÿ‘‰ DO IT NOW (2 minutes):
Grab someone at home and practice the positions: where you stand, where your fist goes. Hands only, no real thrusts. If it ever happens, your body will already know what to do.

โœ… Practiced it? Comment DONE on the Facebook post.
๐Ÿ” Share this with every parent and grandparent you know. It could be their kitchen.

If back blows and thrusts don't work, there's a backup tool I keep in my own kitchen drawer. Here's what it is and why: the home kit page (Tool links on that page are affiliate links.)

Quick question. Where is your first aid kit, right now?

If your honest answer is "somewhere upstairs" or "in the car, I think," you're in good company. But in an emergency, nobody has time to search.

๐Ÿ‘‰ DO IT NOW (2 minutes):
Go find it. Move it to the kitchen, where most home injuries happen. Open it: toss anything expired, note what's missing, and tell everyone in the house where it lives now.

โœ… Found it? Comment DONE and tell us where it was hiding.
๐Ÿ” Share this. Somebody you love has a kit full of expired bandages.

A slip of the saw. Broken glass. A crash on a back road. Someone with a severe bleeding injury can bleed to death within minutes, and out here the ambulance can be a long way off.

You can stop it with three actions after you call 911:
1๏ธโƒฃ Press hard on the wound with both hands
2๏ธโƒฃ Pack a deep wound tightly with gauze or clean cloth
3๏ธโƒฃ On an arm or leg that won't stop, a tourniquet 2 to 3 inches above the wound, not on a joint

๐Ÿ‘‰ DO IT NOW (2 minutes):
Look up a Stop the Bleed class near you at stopthebleed.org and put it on your calendar. Then answer honestly: do you own a real tourniquet?

โœ… Class booked or kit checked? Comment DONE on the Facebook post.
๐Ÿ” Share this with anyone who runs a chainsaw, a farm or a workshop.

A smoke alarm with a dead battery looks exactly like one that works. You only find out on the night it matters.

๐Ÿ‘‰ DO IT NOW (2 minutes):
Walk the house and press the test button on every smoke alarm: every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, every level. Silent? Replace the battery today, not this weekend.

Then flip one over and check the date on the back. If it's 10 years old or more, replace the whole alarm.

Make it a habit: test on the first of every month.

โœ… All beeping? Comment DONE on the Facebook post.
๐Ÿ” Share this and tag the person in your family who always says "I'll get to it."

Tomorrow, Day 6: the pan is on fire. The first instinct most people have makes it worse. Follow the page so you see it.

Cooking is the leading cause of home fires in the U.S. And the first instinct most people have, throwing water on it, turns a pan fire into a kitchen fire. Water on burning grease flashes to steam and throws flaming oil everywhere.

The right move is three steps:
๐Ÿ”น Slide a lid or baking sheet over the pan
๐Ÿ”น Turn off the burner
๐Ÿ”น Leave the lid on until it's cool. Never carry a burning pan outside.
If it spreads beyond the pan: everyone out, call 911 from outside.

๐Ÿ‘‰ DO IT NOW (2 minutes):
Put a lid that fits your biggest pan right next to the stove, where you can grab it without thinking. Show everyone who cooks in your house.

โœ… Lid in place? Comment DONE on the Facebook post.
๐Ÿ” Share this with the cook in your family.

For fires that start when nobody's in the kitchen, there are automatic suppressors that mount under the range hood. More on that in my home safety guide: the home kit page

Halfway there. Today is the one skill I'd want every single person reading this to have.

About 3 out of 4 cardiac arrests outside the hospital happen at home. And immediate CPR can double or triple someone's chance of survival. The person who collapses is most likely someone you love, in your own living room.

Hands-only CPR is two steps:
1๏ธโƒฃ Call 911 and put the phone on speaker
2๏ธโƒฃ Push hard and fast in the center of the chest: at least 2 inches deep, 100 to 120 pushes a minute. Don't stop until help takes over.

๐Ÿ‘‰ DO IT NOW (2 minutes):
Kneel next to a couch cushion and do 30 compressions at a steady, fast pace. Feel the rhythm and the depth. That's the whole skill.

โœ… Did your 30? Comment DONE on the Facebook post.
๐Ÿ” Share this. The more people nearby who know CPR, the better the odds for everyone.

A hands-on CPR class makes it stick. The American Heart Association lists courses near you at cpr.heart.org. One week to go in The Ready Home. Stay with it.

CPR buys time. An AED, the defibrillator on the wall at the gym or church, can restart the heart. It talks you through every step and only shocks if the heart needs it. You can't use it wrong.

But it only helps if someone knows where it is.

๐Ÿ‘‰ DO IT NOW (2 minutes):
Think of the 3 places you spend the most time: work, church, school, the gym. Do you know exactly where each one keeps its AED? Next time you're there, find it and look at it.

If you're CPR-trained: download the free PulsePoint Respond app. Where your county uses it, it alerts you to cardiac arrests nearby and shows the closest AED.

When we walk through your door, the first questions are always the same: What medications does she take? Any allergies? Any heart problems?

In that moment, families freeze or guess. And the patient often can't answer.

๐Ÿ‘‰ DO IT NOW (2 minutes per person):
For each person in the house, write one card: name, date of birth, medications and doses, allergies, major conditions, doctor, emergency contact. Tape them inside a kitchen cabinet door or on the fridge.

Update it every time a prescription changes. It's the most useful piece of paper a paramedic can find.

โœ… Cards written? Comment DONE on the Facebook post.
๐Ÿ” Share this with anyone caring for an aging parent. Theirs matters most.

Tip: snap a photo of each card too, so you have it on your phone when you ride along to the hospital.

For an older adult, the fall itself often isn't the worst part. It's lying on the floor for hours because nobody knows.

๐Ÿ‘‰ DO IT NOW (2 minutes):
Walk the path from bed to bathroom with the lights off. Pick up throw rugs and cords, add a night light, and make sure a phone can be reached from the floor.

If someone does fall: don't rush to lift them. Ask where it hurts. Hit their head, can't move a limb, or seem confused? Call 911 and keep them warm and still.

โœ… Path cleared? Comment DONE on the Facebook post.
๐Ÿ” Share this with your parents, or better yet, go walk their path with them this weekend.

For parents who live alone and won't wear a pendant, there are now camera-free fall sensors that call for help on their own. I'll cover them in a future guide. Follow the page.

A toddler with a detergent pod. Grandpa took his pills twice. Someone mixed two cleaners under the sink. What do you do?

Poison Control experts answer 24 hours a day, free and confidential: 1-800-222-1222. (If the person is unresponsive, having a seizure or can't breathe, call 911 instead.)

๐Ÿ‘‰ DO IT NOW (2 minutes):
Save 1-800-222-1222 in your phone as "Poison Control" right now. Add it to the card by your fridge from Day 1. Then move medicines, cleaners and laundry pods up high and out of sight.

This one isn't about "other people." Most fatal opioid overdoses happen in a private home, and a lot of them start with ordinary prescription pain pills after a surgery or an injury.

Naloxone (Narcan) reverses an opioid overdose in minutes. It's sold over the counter, and it's often free from your local health department.

๐Ÿ‘‰ DO IT NOW (2 minutes):
Open the medicine cabinet. Old pain pills? Lock them up or drop them at a take-back site. If anyone at home takes opioids, get naloxone and keep it where everyone can find it.

If someone won't wake up and is barely breathing: call 911, spray one dose in one nostril, support their breathing, and give a second dose after 2 to 3 minutes if there's no response.

โœ… Cabinet checked? Comment DONE on the Facebook post.
๐Ÿ” Share this. No judgment, just readiness.

Grapes, whole hot dogs, nuts, hard candy, popcorn. Round, firm and exactly the size to plug a small child's airway. And choking in a child is fast and often silent.

๐Ÿ‘‰ DO IT NOW (2 minutes):
Send one text to everyone who feeds your young kids, including grandparents, sitters and daycare:
"Please cut grapes and cherry tomatoes lengthwise into quarters, slice hot dogs lengthwise, and skip whole nuts and hard candy. Thank you!"

And keep kids sitting down while they eat: not running, not playing, not in the car.

In a real emergency, people don't freeze because they don't care. They freeze because nobody knows their job. A plan made at the kitchen table turns panic into action.

๐Ÿ‘‰ DO IT NOW (5 minutes, tonight at dinner):
Pick roles.
๐Ÿ”น One person calls 911 on speaker
๐Ÿ”น One person starts first aid
๐Ÿ”น One person unlocks the door, turns on the porch light, puts the dog away and waves in the ambulance

Look at what you've done in 14 days: address posted, kit found, alarms tested, choking, bleeding and CPR practiced, meds listed, poison number saved. You are now the person in the room who knows what to do.

โœ… Finished the 14 days? Comment DONE on the Facebook post. I want to see how many homes we made ready.
๐Ÿ” One last ask: share this series with one family you care about. That's how this spreads.
